This Isole Pontese Itinerary will help you plan a dreamy getaway

Pontine Islands Itinerary Pt. 1: Getting There

How to Reach the Pontine Islands

The Pontine Islands are conveniently accessible from the mainland, with ferries and hydrofoils operating from several ports in Lazio and Campania. Here’s how you can get there:

  • From Rome: Take a train to Formia or Anzio, where you can catch a ferry to Ponza or Ventotene. The journey from Rome to Formia takes about an hour, and the ferry ride adds another 2-3 hours, depending on your destination.

  • From Naples: Ferries and hydrofoils are available from Naples to Ventotene. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours.

  • From Terracina: For those heading directly to Palmarola, you can board a boat from Ponza, as Palmarola is only accessible via sea from Ponza.

For ferry schedules and ticket bookings, check out Direct Ferries and SNAV.

Isole Pontine Itinerary Pt. 2: Where to Stay

Ponza island in Italy
Ponza is the most popular island in the Isole Pontine

Ponza: Best Places to Stay

Ponza is the largest and most popular island in the Pontine Islands. It offers a variety of accommodations, ranging from luxury hotels to charming B&Bs.

  • Hotel Chiaia di Luna: This stunning hotel offers panoramic views of the sea and is one of the most sought-after accommodations on the island. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a relaxing retreat. Book here.

  • Villa Laetitia: A historic villa with a contemporary twist, offering luxury suites with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. Ideal for travelers seeking elegance and comfort. Explore more.

Ventotene Island in Italy
Ventotene is my favorite of the Isole Pontine

Ventotene: Best Places to Stay

Ventotene, known for its tranquility and historical significance, offers a more laid-back experience. My favorite of the Pontine islands!

  • Hotel Villa Iulia: Nestled in the heart of Ventotene, this hotel combines comfort with convenience. It’s close to the main square and beaches, making it a great base for exploring the island. Discover more.

  • Hotel Agave e Ginestra: Situated in Ventotene, 1.8 km from Spiaggia di Cala Nave, Hotel Agave e Ginestra features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a terrace and a restaurant. Featuring a bar, the property is located within 2 km of Cala Rossano Beach. Romantic spot. Learn more.

Palmarola island in Italy
Palmarola is the most natural of the Isole Pontine

Palmarola: Where to Stay

Palmarola is uninhabited, so there are no accommodations directly on the island. Most visitors stay in Ponza and take day trips to Palmarola. However, Marco and I had gone with our own boat and brought camping gear for two nights of nautical camping- it was amazing, and if you can arrange to go with your own boat or rent a boat, I highly recommend it. The daytime was a bit crowded in Palmarola, but the nights were amazing, romantic, and peaceful. We had a whole cove to ourselves!

Ventotene island in Italy
Ventotene and Ponza have great restaurants.

Pontine Islands Itinerary Pt. 3: Top Restaurants in Ponza & Ventotene

Ponza Restaurants

  • Ristorante EEA: Known for its incredible seafood and stunning views, this restaurant offers a fine dining experience that highlights the flavors of the Mediterranean.

  • Il Tramonto: A must-visit for its breathtaking sunset views and delicious Italian cuisine, Il Tramonto is perfect for a romantic dinner or a relaxed evening with friends.

Ventotene Restaurants

  • Il Giardino: This charming restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere and a menu full of fresh, local ingredients. Try their seafood dishes and homemade pasta for an authentic Italian experience.

  • Ristorante La Terrazza di Mimi: Enjoy the best of Ventotene's culinary offerings at La Terrazza di Mimi, known for its fresh seafood and lovely terrace views.

Palmarola Dining

Since Palmarola is uninhabited, dining options are limited. However, there is one restaurant on all of Palmarola! O' Francese. You have to take a boat and either swim, take a dingy, or kayak, to get to it. The restaurant does not have a pick up/ drop off service.

Marco and I swam over there one afternoon for a gelato, and the other evenings we cooked on board with a camping stove. Many visitors pack a picnic or enjoy meals provided by their tour operators.

Ponza has a bigger nightlife scene

Pontine Islands Itinerary Pt. 4: Nightlife in Ponza and Ventotene

Ponza Nightlife

  • Frontone Club: Ponza’s nightlife scene revolves around Frontone Club, where you can dance the night away under the stars. This beach club is famous for its lively atmosphere, DJ sets, and stunning beachfront location.

  • Covo Nord Est: Known for its chic ambiance and sea views, Covo Nord Est is the place to be for cocktails and good vibes. It's a great spot to start your evening with friends.

Ventotene Nightlife

Ventotene's nightlife is low key, but cute! It's a very locals island, and nearly everyone knows everyone. Here are the main options:

  • Art Cafe: The bar preferred by the 30s and up crowd. Sip on a after dinner digestif while vibing to live music.

  • Muraglione44: The bar preferred by the 20s and under crowd. Grab a beer or a gin and tonic, and chat it up in the street.

  • Bar Il Gabiano: One of two spots for dancing on the island, where the same DJ plays the same set pretty much every time, yet it's still fun! Generally a young scene.

  • Il Faro: The second of the two spots for dancing on the island (it takes turns alternating nights with Il Gabiano.) A lighthouse-turned-beach club at night. Also a young scene.
